The New Way of Tonating
A New Way of Tonating has been developed that uses the head as the energy input region (meaning, light is shined on the head only). The energy is received into the head and dispersed wherever needed in the body.
How is The New Way done?
Information for the technically minded:
The head has the largest and most consistent blood supply that can reach the rest of the body. By using the full 12:56 Forecast cycle, the blood’s platelets/fluid/corpuscles are energized with the color potency and continuously circulate throughout the body. In this manner, areas able to receive/react to this particular color energy will do so. Both junctions are included for the best possible result.
How to put The New Way into practice:
In the original method, it is essential that tonations be done on bare skin (instructions are found in Chapter 5 of the book). This is still the tried and true method that can always be used. However, sometimes its just too cold to do this comfortably, or you just can’t stop during the day for a tonation, so a way was devised to be able to tonate fully clothed (even covered with blankets) and while sleeping.
Using The New Way, clothing is not removed. Only the head needs to be uncovered. If done at night, changing to bedtime attire (with no head covering) is recommended. Otherwise, wear loose, comfortable clothing that keeps you warm enough. Cover up with a blanket, if needed.
A PAR-38 stage lamp, or a cardboard light box (both lined inside with kitchen foil), using a 40-watt incandescent bulb, is placed at the north end of the bed a few feet away from the head. An LED bulb can also be used if the appropriate filters are available (LED bulbs require an entirely different set of filters/color gels than incandescent). See LED lights for Color Therapy for more information.
Try to place the lamp/light box far enough to give a beam as wide as a double bed so that rolling, tossing or turning will not prevent the beam from shining on the head. Care must be exercised in the type of pillows: if too soft or thick, your head may sink in and prevent the color beam from reaching its target. Raising the lamp with a book or flat box may help or use a flatter pillow.
Lay down on the bed, using as many blankets as needed to stay warm and comfortable; put the color filter you’ve selected into the light box; turn the light on and tonate for three hours. An electric timer can be used, set for three hours. Sleeping during the tonation is a good thing.
Advantages of The New Way
- Heating up the tonation room isn’t required
- Systemic front and back, as well as local areas are simultaneously influenced/affected.
- One tonation in 12 hours is advised as it takes hours for the color energy to dissipate. A local tonation could be taken, if needed, within the 12 hours.
- Allows for movement — avoids staying in one position for an hour.
- Doesn’t interfere with daily activities (is done at bedtime).
- Charges quarts of blood as it circulates (color-charged water uses ounces).
Disadvantages
- Not usable with the DuoChrome technique – you’ll only be able to use one color at a time.
- The last Forecast Daylight time or Night time should not be used as they will overlap Sunset or Sunrise.
- Best suited for larger, more systemic issues. For other localized problems like for sprains, small burns, hernias, bruises, toothache, etc., local one-hour tonations may be better.
- May interfere with sleep due to the long illumination time. If so, using an eye cover (eye shade, blindfold) can be helpful.
- If you have head issues, such as vertigo, head pressure, head trauma, get migraines from light, or any other issue related to the head, three hours of direct light on the head may be too much and not appropriate for you. Try it out for a shorter period and see how well your head tolerates it before trying the full three hours.
Note: This technique is relatively new so your comments and experiences after using it would be appreciated.
Frequently Asked Questions About The New Way:
Q: Is The New Way done fully clothed and covered in blankets?
A: Yes.
Q: Can be used for for any condition, normally done on a specific part of the body like the the liver or kidneys?
A: Yes, except local injuries, such as sprains, small burns, hernias, bruises, toothache, and other localized problems. These, and other localized problems may respond better to direct light on the specific area.
Q: Is it done with the light shining only on the top of the head?
A: Yes. The light should be aimed at the head and down the body.
Q: How long does it last? A: For 3 hours.
Q: Can it be done when sleeping? A: Yes!
Q: Is it critical that a PAR-38 stage lamp be used?
A: No, any reflective light box can be used.
Q: Do LED filters require different color gels? If so, what are they?
A: Yes. See LED lights for Color Therapy for more information and a chart with the gel numbers.
Background information:
In its early years, Spectro-Chrome had few technical guidelines. Tonations were of any duration, whenever convenient. This changed in 1933 with the introduction of the Forecast (originally called the Favorscope). This is when a tonation became one hour in length so that a junction (balanced pressure in the nostrils) would be included within the hour. Junctions occur 44 minutes after beginning the tonation at a Forecast time.
A complete Forecast cycle takes two hours and 56 minutes (2:56). The 2:56 can be divided into four continually changing 44-minute phases:
- Tonation begins: One nostril is at minimum pressure, the other at maximum pressure. In 44 minutes, the pressures are not equal — this is the first junction.
- 44 minutes after the first junction, maximum and minimum nostril pressure are reached. The pressure process now reverses.
- 44 minutes later, the second junction occurs, and the nostrils are again at equal pressures.
- In the last 44-minute phase, the nostrils return to the point where they began. The total time is 2:56, and is the beginning of the next Forecast time.
In a one-hour tonation, only the first junction is utilized. This was usually more effective than doing the tonation at anytime (the any-time way).
So why wasn’t the full three hours used for a tonation? A possible reason for not using the full three-hours for tonations is that it may have been considered impractical — until now with The New Way.
On the other hand, its quite possible that taking in a full-body tonation for three hours is simply a lot for the entire body, but perfectly fine with The New Way.
Where can I read about nostril pressure?
Is this dominant nostril breath?
Do you start with the left nostril dominant ?
A shoe cut on my foot has become infected. My podiatrist cleaned it. But being a diabetic I am using a green light for 50 mts localized on the spot.
Is this correct procedure?
For all of these questions: Left and right nostril, high and low pressure, varies with time of day and Sunrise and Sunset. Also, the number of breaths vs. heart beats is usually about four or five heart to breath but this number can be considerably different and still be OK for that person.
Regarding toe: Besides Green, Blue can be tried. It would be well to use systemic tonations to lessen the possibility of the infection spreading.
More alert since doing Lemon therapy on stroke patient. Frequency 275 says lemon for 2 weeks. Has been 4 treatments so far.
Desires to do treatments instead of apathy. Stays awake longer in daytime next day. Moves around more. Interested in healing rather than just being there.
Would it be okay to use this for up to 9 hours while sleeping? I am using green only.
Must the light, in the new way, only shine on the crown of the head or may it cast across the whole bed as long as itβs placed behind the head (at an elevated position, so as to cast far and wide)?
Using the light for up to 9 hours while sleeping is no problem for most people, but for some it is an overload of energy. Setting a timer for three hours on the electric cord is better.
It’s not a problem to place the light behind the bed so it casts across the whole bed, though it may make getting to sleep more difficult.
Would it be possible to post a list of the forecast times? ππ»
The forecast schedule is printed out for the year and mailed out to members of the Dinshah Health Society, the non-profit organization behind Dinshah Color Therapy. Membership is only $3.00 per year and comes with about 4 newsletters a year as well. This small fee helps support the continuation of the work and is affordable to most everyone.
You can print out the form here, or simply write your information on a piece of paper:

Could one use just the aluminum lamp with gel clipped to the front, rather than employing the box?
Could you post a list of the forecast times, by chance?
Thank you ππ»
Yes, that works just fine as long as there is some room for air circulation between the gel and the aluminum lamp. If the gel is connected to the lamp all the way around, too much heat will build up and it will either warp the gel or crack it.
In order to get enough air circulation to keep the gel cool, you can leave the bottom free and just pin it at the top or insert a piece of cardboard to act as a spacer between the lamp frame and the gel.
The gels are on the delicate side. It helps to put the get into a cardboard frame so you’re pinning the cardboard, not the actual gel. Or, at least tape the edges with clear packing tape for more durability.
